Mill State Park
Watson
Mill State Park is about a twenty minute drive outside of Athens, but its
gentle flowing rapids and old world aesthetic definitely make it worth
the trip. The Bridge, pictured above and below, was built in 1885
and still supports traffic. There is a small parking fee required
(about three dollars or so), but the activities the park provides more
than compensate for the monetary deductions. Paddle boats and canoes
are available for rent, camping is available as well as outside grills
and picnic tables, and there are three walking trails for the visitor's
amusement. If you are feeling a little less active, there are plenty
of fine, flat rocks right on the river, perfect for sunning. Fishing
is also allowed. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited, and all dogs
must be kept on a leash (though I must confess that these rules are not
as strict as they sound, but you didn't hear that from me). To get
to the park, take 29 north (get on the loop from Milledge and head towards
College Station and keep going straight), to 72 east (take a right at when
Charlie William's Pinecrest Lodge is on your left) and take that all the
way to a town called Comer. At Comer go through the first light,
then turn right by the tire place onto 22 west (there will be a sign pointing
towards the park), and take 22 west for another mile until you see another
sign for the park pointing left. Take that left straight into the
park. Enjoy!
