Final Exam: Measure for Measure

Due Friday August 11 at 11:00

This take-home exam should be of the same length and scope of your other short papers. It should also be typed. Choose one of the following topics:

1. Lucio calls the Duke the "duke of dark corners," and when Angelo is exposed, he calls the Duke a "power divine." Which is it? (Look at imagery of heaven and hell as part of answering this question.) Are there any higher authorities beyond the promptings of the body?

2. Would it be a "charity in sin" for Isabella to sacrifice her virginity for Claudio's life? Or would it be a form of incest, as she claims? In other words, is there any difference between chastity and virginity?

3. Claudio is condemned for a "fault," a deficiency or failing. Are sexual crimes faults or sins in this play? (In answering this question, you can also consider the role of such human bodily functions such blood and affection.)

4. Why, in an important way, is slander or calumny the worst crime in Measure for Measure?

5. In some ways, this play suggests that wielding authority is acting and that dukes are primarily actors. This sense is reinforced by the imagery of act and acting, and of clothing and faces, the elements of disguise. How does this imagery of acting and disguise affect your understanding of the nature of authority in Measure for Measure?
